The tomato belongs to the Solanaceae family, of tropical origin (Latin America). It is sensitive to cold, frost and hot winds (chergui) and very demanding in temperature.
What is the best temperature for your tomatoes?
Tomatoes can withstand minimum and maximum temperatures of 5°C and 35°C for a few hours. The
optimal temperature regime is 18 to 24 °C during the day and 16 to 20 °C at night, a temperature lower
than 10 °C could strongly affect the growth and development of your tomatoes.
Growing tomatoes in an environment that is too dry or too humid will strongly influence the productivity of the crop, humidity can lead to problems of fungal diseases and poor fertilization of flowers. The optimal percentage of hygrometry is between 65 and 80 %.
Why adopt a precision irrigation system?
The roots of the tomato are fragile, it is a plant quite sensitive to both water deficit and excess water. Precision irrigation is therefore the optimal solution for the good development of the roots, it allows to provide the plant with the quantity of water it needs at the moment it needs it.
The stages where water needs are critical are between flowering, fruit set and fruit enlargement, a water deficit can impact the production and development of tomatoes. Similarly, an excess of water, especially at the low consumption stages, can cause root asphyxia and total plant dieback.
