Save water while increasing the yield of your citrus fruits thanks to precision irrigation!
What is the right temperature to grow citrus fruits?
The average temperatures favorable to the cultivation of citrus fruits are : 10-12°C for winter averages and 22-24°C for summer averages. However, low winter and spring temperatures are often a limiting factor for the extension of the crop.
Do citrus fruits tolerate humidity?
A relative humidity between 60 and 70% is considered a good level for the cultivation of citrus. When the relative humidity is low, the climatic demand for water is high.
If the water availability in the rhizosphere is not adequate, this can lead to wilting and burning of organs, desiccation of stigmas and pollen, flower and berry drop. When the relative humidity is high, fungi (Phytophtora, fumagina, ...) can develop.
What type of soil is suitable for your citrus trees?
• Citrus fruits prefer light and well aerated soils. They ensure good drainage and good retention of water and mineral elements and allow for early harvests of good quality.
• Very sandy soils have a low water and mineral retention capacity and heavy soils are asphyxiating and cause nutritional problems.
• For the pH, citrus fruits grow best in slightly acidic soils (6 to 6.5).
Citrus trees have an annual water requirement of about 12,000 m3/ha, which must be well distributed over the year depending on the region and the rainfall.
Thanks to drip irrigation, citrus trees have gone from 16,000 to 18,000 m3/ha under traditional irrigation to a range of 8,000 to 10,000 m3/ha with the possibility of reducing consumption to 5,000 m3/ha with the use of new technologies (tensiometers or water sensors...) while ensuring yields 2 to 3 times higher.
Thanks to precision irrigation, you can promote the development and yield of your plants by avoiding water stress during the different growth phases.
