The melon is a herbaceous plant with a summer tendency and an annual cycle. It is of South Asian and Persian origin. In Morocco, 3 types of melon have become established for the local market, namely the Yellow Canary Melon, the Pineapple and the Galia. For the export market and especially the European market, it is the Charentais melon which is very appreciated.
Temperature suitable for melon cultivation:
The melon is a demanding crop in light. The ¨Cantaloup charentais¨ can even support an uninterrupted lighting. Indeed, the growth of melon increases with the quantity of received energy what allows the plant to arrive more quickly at the phase of appearance of the female flowers.
Recommended soil characteristics for melons :
The water requirements of the melon crop are variable depending on the development cycle and the type of production. Through localized irrigation, it is possible to improve the quality of the soil and to limit the attack of pathogens and micro-organisms by means of fertigation, which allows to support the plant during all the different stages of development and not only at the beginning of its growth.
The melon is a very demanding plant and requires a large amount of water, especially in the phases following the first stage of development. It is therefore essential to use an irrigation system that allows precise control of the amount of water administered. Insufficient amounts of water affect vegetative growth and fruit quality, while excess water can cause fruit shattering, loss of sugars or increased vitreousness.
