The potato is the most consumed vegetable in Morocco, it covers an area of 60 000 ha annually (early season, season and after-season). It has a high nutritional value, rich in phosphorus and vitamin B.
What are the best weather conditions to grow your potatoes?
• The potato adapts to a wide range of climates but has specific needs. It is a cold season plant, preferring a cool climate with moderate temperatures and it is sensitive to frost (foliage destroyed at - 2°C).
• The minimum soil temperature at the time of planting is 8°C.
• It is particularly sensitive to prolonged periods of drought or humidity during the formation of flowers and tubers.
What is the preferred soil type for your potatoes?
Potatoes can require up to 25 mm of water per week during the tuber development period. At the same time, it is very sensitive to both excessive and insufficient irrigation, which can damage the plants and later the tubers. Its water requirements, low at the beginning of vegetation, become very important at the time of leaf growth (flowering) and tuberization.
Whatever the type of soil, the water supply must be constant but not excessive. The use of localized irrigation ensures the proper development of the tuber formation phase or their enlargement. It also allows better control of the risk of having regrowth, deformed tubers, cracked skin or the development of scab in pustules. On average, we can consider that irrigating allows to gain between 10 and 15 t/ha of yield, whatever the year.
